CEO of HealthSource, Dr. Tomshack, Talks about the Uniqueness of HealthSource Franchise

After building a private chain of chiropractic clinics for years based around giving patients the most advanced care possible, HealthSource started franchising in 2006. Meet Dr. Chris Tomshack, CEO of HealthSource chiropractic health franchise. In this interview, he details what sets HealthSource apart from the competition, and why now is an exciting time to join our passionate team of franchise owners.

What is HealthSource?

HealthSource is the preeminent brand that exists within chiropractic today, and what separates us from the other Chiropractic Clinics out there is the fact that what we do is research-forward. We comb the research every single year. We are looking for the most efficacious advancements in how to get people better, quicker, and so they can stay better longer. From that standpoint, we are far and away the most advanced brand that exists within chiropractic today.

What makes HealthSource unique?

What sets HealthSource apart from the other experiences that people can have at another chiropractic clinic is very straightforward. It’s the level of care that we provide, and it’s the type of care that we provide. At a typical chiropractic clinic, it’s kind of a one-size-fits-all approach. They rely most heavily on adjusting the spine or manipulation of the articulations within the skeletal system, which is all well and good. But that’s only 1/7 of the care. That’s 1/7 of the care that HealthSource provides.

So when a brand new patient walks into HealthSource, the experience is totally different, especially if they’ve been to another chiropractic clinic, because what they see is state of the art. They see high-powered lasers in action, they see people with herniated discs, getting on our third generation spinal decompression machine, and getting off smiling and laughing, moving and twisting and turning where they couldn’t moments before. They see people getting better, and they see people engaged in our active functional rehab program, which utilizes a proprietary algorithm that we designed. It designs an absolutely tailor-made strengthening program, so that a patient’s weaknesses and injuries can be rehabilitated as quickly and as efficiently as humanly possible. They see branded nutrition.

They see people and patients being treated like they matter, like they care, and they’re all treated differently. In other words, every patient has a unique treatment program that is the most advanced program available, so they get the best results possible. They see people that are happy with their chosen source.

What are some of the benefits for franchisees?

Within the HealthSource system, our marketing team has one mission in mind — their burning mission, what they wake up thinking about, what they go to bed thinking about, and that is: How do we help drive more new patients into each individual HealthSource franchise clinic? Because it doesn’t matter how good the system is or how good the clinical systems are, and ours are the best. Nothing matters unless there are people coming through the door, so our marketing team lives and breathes everything about driving and attracting more new patients to our brand. That makes the franchisee experience that much more bountiful, and reduces some of the stress.

With respect to some of the tools, we have a proprietary software system that we run, so we’re not running one of the off the shelf systems that pretty much everybody else uses. Ours drives the most advanced statistical package that exists within chiropractic. In short order, we can take a look at the metrics or the KPIs within a practice, and within a minute know exactly what the strengths are, and what the weaknesses are. We then know how to effectively coach and lead that franchisee to get over whatever sticking point they’re running into, so they can achieve their vision.

What is the franchise culture like?

The HealthSource franchise culture is extremely unique. We are one large family. There are truly a lot of people who will give that type of terminology, that type of verbiage, and a lot of lip service. We live and breathe it. So for instance, we’ve got several mastermind groups within the HealthSource system. One of them is called the Panthers, that’s our top level group. The Panthers is a group that flies in three times a year, and we train intensively for two days at a time.

We’ve all heard the adage that if you look around at your inner circle of five people, that’s about as successful as you’re going to be relative to their level of success. In other words, this is supposed to be as successful as they are. That’s about how much you’re going to grow. So we help add new people into that inner circle, and inside of all of our franchisees’ lives, we do that through our mastermind groups. And when we do that, we see amazing growth.

As a matter of fact, the members of our mastermind group double the growth of non-mastermind members. Why? Because we alter that inner circle of advisers, and that helps build that culture of ‘hey, we’re in this together’, no one’s out there running their business all on their own. We have other people we can talk to, we have other people we can communicate with. We have texting threads that run all day and all night long. When I wake up and I wake up early, I’m already 24–25 texts behind, and we’ve got to catch up and find out exactly what’s going on. The corporate team all offers insight and support through those processes as well. So HealthSource support, it never ends. This is what we do from morning to night, it helps drive the visions of each one of our franchisees.

What are you most proud of when it comes to your experience with HealthSource?

The two things that I’m most proud of about the HealthSource brand and the HealthSource family are very, very cool. So number one is, and I visit a lot of clinics, when I walk into one of our franchise locations and a patient stops me and tells me how much better their experience is inside of HealthSource than in the other healthcare facilities they’ve been to. Brings tears to my eyes still today. It happened again yesterday. It happens all the time. That makes me extraordinarily proud.

The other thing that makes me happy, and also extraordinarily proud, is when a franchise owner tells me that they are at a level of success that they never dreamed humanly possible. And that also touches me, because that’s why we do what we do. It’s not just to build businesses, it’s to change lives and improve lives. and help people achieve their dreams, and to help people live their dreams. That’s what really makes me proud.

Franchise Owner Joined Support Staff to Help Grow Franchise System

With over 140 franchise locations open and thriving today, HealthSource chiropractic health franchise boasts a strong support system made up of people who know the business model inside and out. Having started out as a HealthSource owner, Dr. Maz Nejad joined the HealthSource franchise management team in 2021. Using his previous experience as a franchisee, he enjoys helping other franchise owners build their businesses, so they can provide the incredible customer service and effective treatments HealthSource is known for. In this interview, Dr. Maz discusses the franchisee experience, from support to available resources, and everything in between.

What makes HealthSource unique?

HealthSource is unique compared to our competitors. What makes us unique is the support, and the training that’s second to none. And also the types of treatments we provide for our patients.

What kind of support can franchisees expect?

As a HealthSource franchisee, it’s kind of nice to know that yes, you are the owner of the clinic, you are the owner of your own business, but you are receiving so much hand-holding by the staff of the HealthSource home office. We hold your hand through the entire process of finding a location, finding talent for your clinic and business, but also how to market and how to run the systems and operations. Everything is included. And we will be working together to make you as successful as possible.

What kinds of tools or resources are available to franchisees?

Our software system is second to none, it allows our franchisees to do many different things. It goes beyond your EHR, which is the Electronic Health Records, where the doctors and staff keep notes. It goes beyond scheduling of the patients, it actually connects to our marketing and our website. So patients can fill out information online before they come in as a new patient. They can schedule appointments, or they can contact the clinic, before they actually come into the clinic. You can also do billing through our software as well. It also provides you with the metrics of the clinic and how well the clinic is doing, or where the weaknesses are. It’s extraordinary. And it’s very helpful for us as a home office to be able to monitor that with the owners of the clinic and address some of the weaknesses or celebrate the strengths.

How does HealthSource help with site selection?

One of the great things about HealthSource is the opportunity that is available, because we have many available prime sites and locations for our franchisees. When combined with a great offering of products and services, this makes us really unique and desirable for the investors out there, and for our franchisees. We usually help them with the demographics of the median average income for the patients or customers for that region. We also help them find the right location, so they get enough visibility for them to attract new patients.

How do you help franchisees find the right talent?

There are several different ways we go about that. First of all, I travel to all the chiropractic colleges, or most of them, and I promote our clinics nationwide to students. Our model is so attractive to them, because it allows them to be the doctor, to provide the right type of treatment for their patients, and it’s not limited to just the chiropractic treatment. They love our model and they can’t wait to join our team. But there are other ways as well: we use our development website to promote HealthSource clinics and to attract lead chiropractors or clinic directors.

Is HealthSource scalable?

We are certainly built to be scalable for our franchisees to expand into multiple locations. As a matter of fact, many territories that we sold last year were sold to our current franchisees — we’re expanding. We have several franchisees who have multiple units and they go beyond just two. They have five, six, and they’re doing extremely well. With our systems and operations in place, and of course marketing and our training, it makes it a lot easier for a franchisee to expand. It’s a great opportunity.

Where is HealthSource growing?

We’re growing fast, and there has been a tremendous amount of interest in HealthSource. It’s interesting, because even during COVID, when most offices declined in growth, we actually grew 4%, and it has continued throughout. In 2021, we grew double digits. In 2022, the same, and we expect to do the same thing in 2023. This is store to store growth. So that has been very attractive to investors and other franchisee prospects.

Dr. Fresh and His Experience as a Top HealthSource Franchise Owner

Dr. Stewart Fresh, HealthSource franchise owner in South Louisiana, worked as a chiropractor for 17 years, running a fully functioning clinic before utilizing HealthSource to get his business to the next level. Now, he loves getting to help other entrepreneurs and chiropractors build up their businesses so they can help even more patients. Why franchise with HealthSource?

For us, the reason we chose HealthSource was because we came up here for what was called Discovery Day. It’s an opportunity to see the corporate office, meet the people that are behind it, and a chance to meet Dr. Tomshack. After sitting down with him and seeing what his vision was, for us, it fell in line with what our vision was. We knew we wanted to grow. I just didn’t know how to grow. I really didn’t know, at that point, what my growth would be, or how to make my practice bigger.

That was the thing for us that led us to HealthSource, was the question of how do we duplicate? What do we do, and what’s the plan for that? So coming up here for Discovery Day, meeting Dr. Tomshack and seeing that vision connecting with what we were looking for, that was it. It was a good fit for us. And it’s been amazing for us in the short three years that we’ve been with HealthSource. It’s made a huge difference for us, professionally, and personally. Sometimes stress in the business can lead to stress elsewhere. So anytime you’ve got help, you’ve got a system and procedures to fall back on. It definitely simplifies things and makes it easier to move through life, whether you’re at work, or whether you’re at home. It’s been a good thing for us.

What is the training and initial support like?

After Discovery Day, they showed us the software that we use, and different things like that. We got to learn really what sets HealthSource apart, what makes it unique, why it would be a good fit for us, and after that we went home and kind of mulled it over and thought about it. After we made the decision to do that, the process was really just getting everything transitioned over to a new software and things like that. They worked with us through that process, and really made that as easy as possible.

We did have some issues, because we opened right when COVID started. So it was kind of a hectic time, just in general. But having that support of HealthSource made even that situation easier on us, just because we had help to know what we needed to do, and these are the things that you got to follow now, and this and that. It helped us through that process.

That transition or conversion from what we were doing, in our practice, to becoming a HealthSource practice was easier than I thought it would be. But you’re coached through that, you’re brought through that, you’ve got people that help you throughout that entire process. It was easier going through that conversion with the help of HealthSource than it would have been for me to try and figure out how to even continue what I was doing on my own without that support.

What about ongoing support for franchisees?

Obviously, you hear the cliche term, that “open door policy.” We’re in South Louisiana, and headquarters is in Cleveland, so we can’t just open the door and walk into the support office. But anytime we call, we get an immediate response. You don’t have to wait long to get some help. That support on the fly is helpful.

From more of a structured support perspective: we’re part of a group with Healthsource, it’s a Mastermind group where we come up to Cleveland three times a year. We meet, and it’s a bunch of minds coming together and discussing things that are going on in each other’s clinics, and some of the victories they’ve had, some of the struggles that they have, and we all kind of help work through those things together.

There’s a lot of things that you don’t think are things that you’re struggling with, and maybe you’re not aware of it, but when you hear somebody else, should we actually have the same thing, I don’t even think about that. So those things are beneficial for us. We’re always growing. We’re always continuing to strive for growth and to learn. Other than that, we’ve got regional support, we’ve got people that we connect with, and we talk to on a weekly basis. We definitely get that ongoing support system through HealthSource.
